It's all about the Wilderness.
How Outermost helps the Wild by donating to environmental projects from every sale we make. Protecting the wilderness to keep it wild

Our Beneficiaries.

In our first blog we introduced our new brand Outermost and explained it's sustainable, circular set up and traceability. This month we want to tell you a little more about our initial beneficiaries, where donations from your orders go and why we chose them.

Wilderness is not a luxury, but a necessity of the human spirit - Edward Abbey

Outermost Apparel is our drop in the ocean of help that this planet needs to maintain and protect it's wild areas. We have been to the Himalayas and to the Amazon basin, trekked through the Redwood forests of the PNW and California, and dived into the underwater world off the coast of Borneo. These amazing first hand experiences of the incredible natural world have been our inspiration and motivation, emphasising how precious it is in the face of human's impact. So what could we do?

There are many paths of conservation we could follow but we decided to select three to begin with. While we are new and still working to gradually spread our story, we didn't want to spread our support too thinly but cover the ocean, atmosphere and forests.

Our first beneficiary was Surfers Against Sewage.
They began as a group of people with a shared love for the ocean, fed up of seeing sewage in their seas, on their beaches and getting ill while doing the activities they loved in the water. They're not just about surfing or sewage though, in their 30yrs of campaigning, beach cleans and education they have become the UK's leading marine conservation group, more recently focusing on our climate issues and campaigning for Plastic Free Coastlines. Check out more and how you could help at SAS

Our second beneficiary is One Life, One Tree.
These guys are a new non-profit initiative planting Giant Sequoia's in the UK, benefitting the environment two-fold. Firstly, they purchase large areas of land suitable to planting Sequoia groves which not only protects these areas from development but also gives these beautiful monsters their best chance of reaching maturity. Sequoia's can obviously become giants, some 300 ft tall and 36 ft wide, but during their rapid growth they become incredible carbon off-setters. Absorbing up to 10 x more carbon dioxide from our atmosphere than our other largest trees, like the Oak for example. They calculate that over the average human life span of 80 years, planting one sequoia can offset the lifetime carbon footprint of one person, hence the name! We'd like to mention that they also plant Oak trees with the Sequoias to promote bio diversity. Check them out and buy a tree at One Life, One Tree you can even plant it yourself which is pretty rad.

Our third beneficiary is Junglekeepers.
Junglekeepers are a non profit organisation buying hectares of important Peruvian Amazon jungle to protect it and all it's species that live there from illegal logging, resource extraction and poaching. They also use the donations to employ locals as rangers, some who were previously loggers themselves. Proving that given a choice, local communities will choose to protect their jungle if other forms of income can sustain their families. Junglekeepers have more than doubled their ownership of Amazon through all their fundraising to 11000 hectares since we started following them. It feels amazing to be a small part of this. Check them out at Junglekeepers

A Few Extras...

We have also responded to local and international emergencies to help those who have needed support urgently. When the Australian bush fires were raging in late 2019 / early 2020 we donated to WIRES Animal welfare organisation who were on the frontline rescuing wildlife and caring for them. WIRES also then passed on grants to smaller wildlife rescue and recovery groups that needed finance for all the extra care that was required for the animal influx.

Closer to home, we donated to the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust in their effort to purchase a large area of important wild chalk meadow to protect it, and all the bio diverse species that thrive in it, from development.

This Is Just The Beginning...

We will continue to do as much as we can and want to thank everyone who has bought our organic clothing so far.
