Heading Outermost Vol.1 - South Coast, UK
'Heading Outermost' shares a few new places and trails we've explored here in the UK by foot, paddle and other means. Starting with our South Coast adventures.

Outermost started from our love and respect for the outdoors and we've been super lucky to travel to many beautiful wild areas around the globe. Here in the UK though, there are so many great places to explore. So while international travel is restricted due to the pandemic, we are starting a series of blog posts sharing a few spots we've enjoyed right here in the UK.

1. Hiking Bolt Head to South Sands - Salcombe, South Devon. This is a fairly easy 5.5 mile loop hike which should only take a couple of hours, a little longer if you detour for a swim, or stop for a beer on South Sands beach like we did. It's well worth taking your time. We recommend the free app AllTrails to help with your route finding but this trail is pretty easy to follow once you get going and offers a stretch of stunning coastline to enjoy the views, a few wild horses and some tucked away coves for a swim.

We parked our van off-road at the entrance to the small Bolt Head Airfield and started the hike anti-clockwise on the map. First walking past a row of cottages to pick up the signposted trail which leads you narrowly off behind the houses and up the hill to some fields. Here you'll find a random, lonely stone tower built in the middle of the field. This is actually a historical ship signalling tower which the path takes you past to the start of the cliff-top stretch. The path here is obvious but some care is needed, especially with dogs as there are no fences and the cliff is steep in places and fairly close to the path. This will lead you along some stunning coastal scenery, as seen in the photos, where we made a detour down through an overgrown path to a beautiful cove for a secluded dip in the crystal clear water. Once back up on the path it will wind you all the way to a well earned drink on South Sands beach. From here you can continue along the estuary into Salcombe, or as we did, cut back up heading inland to where we parked before driving into this pretty town with good pubs. The Ferry Inn is our favourite beer garden on the water's edge with a great view along the estuary.

2. Paddleboarding from Knoll Beach to Old Harry Rocks - Studland, Dorset.
This is a scenic, easy paddle when the wind is gentle and offshore, meaning the bay is sheltered by the cliffs. The rocks are rumoured to have got their name from a local pirate 'Old Harry' who would lie in wait behind these stacks ready to ambush passing merchant ships. You can launch for free from Knoll Beach which has a large National Trust car park and a cafe, if arriving early we recommend walking 10 minutes west along the beach to Middle Beach where there is another cheaper cafe with waters edge seating. On Knoll Beach you can rent paddleboards or kayaks if you don't have your own and once launched, if you hug the cliffs, you'll have a smooth ride of about 30 minutes over to these impressive tall, chalk formations for a different perspective of them. You can beach your boards or kayaks and wade around to some small beaches and rocks for a snack or photo opportunity. Then, depending on the wind, you can carry on around the rocks to the town of Swanage. Conditions can be very different once past the rocks and out of the sheltered bay so do check.
Studland Bay is a great spot to explore in, on and out of the water. It's an area of special natural interest, as well as beauty, with it's rare colony of Seahorses which have thrived during lockdown. There is a coastal hike you can make along the headland to Swanage from Knoll Beach taking in the aerial view of Old Harry Rocks. This round trip took us around 4-5hrs with lunch thrown in on Swanage beach.

3. Circular coastal hike from Kimmeridge - Jurassic Coast, Dorset.
Last in this post is a moderate 9 mile coastal trek, depending on your fitness and which way around you hike. Clockwise helps, making the steep cliff section a descent rather than the thigh-burning steep ascent which left us puffing at the top (the view is pretty great while you catch your breathe though).

This trail starts in the small village of Kimmeridge which has a Jurassic fossil museum and nice cafe for your recovery at the end. Again, you can find and follow this trail using the free AllTrails app. We followed it anti-clockwise firstly around Kimmeridge bay and climbing up to the cliff edge. The trail from here heads along the coast and does need some care, it's close to the edge in places and erosion is evident. We kept our dog on a lead here. It's a long stretch along the coast with beautiful, expansive ocean views before you turn and head inland across fields making for the picturesque village of Kingston. Here we stopped at The Scotts Arms which has a great view from the garden across to Corfe Castle. They also have a Jamaican Jerk Kitchen outdoors which we fully recommend to refuel with. From the pub you head back on yourself and fork right along the roadside footpath for a while before heading into the fields which rise up for some great views before heading down towards Kimmeridge and the rewards of some homemade Dorset Apple cake and local ice cream at Clavell's thatched cafe and farm shop.

We hope this post may be useful and you get the chance to try these trails, or at least feel inspired to explore our South Coast further.
