It's estimated that we have lost over half our planets wildlife in the last 50 years. Shocking right?

The 20th century saw some of the biggest impact on our environment since the last Ice Age, largely due to deforestation, grazing, industrialisation, pollution and the excessive use of natural resources. So it's vital that the 21st century is a period of positive change for our planet. We can't go back and prevent what has already happened, but we can learn from it and take action to improve the environment around us and, as we always say, many small efforts can make a big difference.

So 'Rewilding' is the buzz word right now, and there have already been some fantastic projects realised at the start of this decade in the UK. Beavers have been reintroduced to the British Isles after 400 years when they were hunted to extinction. Pairs of White Tailed Eagles have been released on the Isle of Wight, tracked as they roam the UK and there are plans for European Bison to be introduced in Kent this year too. All these animals improve biodiversity, boosting ecosystems just through their natural behaviour. We have also heard this week that the Wildlife Trust has purchased 344 acres of farmland on the Isle of Wight with the sole purpose to rewild it. It's all about nature being allowed to redress the balance that humans have impacted.

These large scale projects are exciting to see, but how can we all help rewild our environment?? Here's our top ideas for making your own contribution to boosting biodiversity and benefitting our ecosystems and environment.

1. Sow a Meadow.

You may not have acres of land on your property to cover in Wildflowers, but it doesn't need that. Pollinating insects are the keystone to a healthy environment and ecosystem, pollinating the flowers and plants that nature needs to blossom and in turn feed all other life. Sowing a mix of Wildflower seeds in a small, sunny corner of your garden, or a local unused piece of land can easily turn it into a colourful sanctuary for busy pollinators including bees, butterflies and ladybirds. These insects roam far and wide, so a small refuge is perfect for some nectar on the go. Your soil doesn't even need to be top quality as wildflowers thrive in poorer soil.

2. Create a Rockery or Wood Pile.

This is another boost for the little guys. An area where you can assemble an assortment of varied rock sizes or stack of logs creates a super habitat for insects that can find a place to live and nest which in turn benefits the next creatures up in the food chain such as Hedgehogs and birds. A simple way of accommodating a hive of life.

3. Put a Pond in your Garden.

Ponds are a fantastic way to attract and support varied wildlife in your garden. They instantly offer a source of water for animals to drink from, a safe place for creatures including Frogs, Newts, Dragonflies and beetles to breed, and birds such as House Martins and Swallows will feed off the wildlife around the water too. Ponds can be easy to create and size does not matter, even a sunken washing up bowl or old sink can be transformed into a watery haven supporting flora and fauna biodiversity.

4. Go Organic.

We know some bugs can be a pest in the garden and you may get thicker and greener grass with a little fertiliser use, but give nature a chance. Nature is the best at keeping everything in check and in healthy working order. You may rid your pest with a few chemicals but will likely take out a few others too, upsetting the balance of the ecosystem in your garden to it's detriment. There are many organic fertilisers on offer too and composting and mulching can be hugely beneficial to your soil and plant growth.

5. Connect in Your Community.

There are many of us who want to, and enjoy, making our little difference to benefit ecosystems where we can. Search for local groups in your area where volunteers may be welcome to help manage larger environmental projects. These may include help with maintaining local parks, woodland and ponds or simply participating in an effort to record wildlife populations to improve local ecosystem data. You can find local groups through social media or online, such as Naturehood.co.uk and RewildingBritain

These are just a few tips to keep in mind if you want to increase the wildlife on your property, but the general rule is to allow nature to do its thing. After all, rewilding ultimately means giving the land back to nature and reducing human impact as much as possible.

Enjoy your time rewilding and make sure you take the time to observe how the wild returns to your home!

We are Outermost Apparel.
